The vision of Higher Education and Campus Ministry is to support and encourage the youth  in the church and community by sharing resources, celebrating achievements, and empowering those pursuing higher education, intellectual and spiritual growth through Jesus Christ.

Our Mission

The mission of the Higher Education and Campus Ministry is a biblically based, Christ-centered resource, designed to enhance communication between youth and the church.  The mission is to touch the lives of youth in the church and the community by providing: 1) opportunities to enhance skills in preparation for a college, vocational or technical education, 2) scholarships to institutions of higher learning, and 3)  student recognition programs.

Donor Scholarships

Donor scholarships were created by a donor or group of donors with a specific objective in mind. In some cases, scholarships were created to honor someone’s memory, and in others, they were created to ensure opportunities would be available to students in the Ben Hill UMC community. In all cases, they were established by individuals who want to help you pursue your dream.

REQUIREMENTS

Each scholarship fund has specific eligibility criteria defined by the donor when the fund was established. Please read through the specific criteria to see if you are eligible.

Mrs.Mable Carolyn Reid Scholarship Expand

This scholarship award is developed in honor of Mrs. Mable Carolyn Reid; an Atlanta native, a 1952 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and a 1956 graduate of Spelman College who has taught in both the Atlanta Public School and Fulton County School Systems for over 40 years.

Always Hope Foundation Business Scholarship Expand

This scholarship is established to encourage those students looking to pursue a career in the Business World with the intent of majoring in Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Management, or Production. The business world is fast-paced, dynamic and rewarding with the opportunity to change your life, your family’s life and improve society. Desire is an important component and a willingness to continuously learn new ways of looking at a situation for the best solution is an asset. II. In addition to a good formal education, the ability to develop relationships and be mentored by a more senior person is a tremendous asset in developing the necessary skills to succeed. The goal of the Always Hope Foundation is to provide monetary help and guidance in pursuing your dreams

Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. Scholarship Expand

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarships for Outstanding Service to Church and/or Community awarded in the amount of $1,000.00 to students who have demonstrated a commitment to outstanding volunteer service in the Church and/or the Community.

Mrs. Doris T. Shockley Scholarship Expand

Mrs. Shockley, born in Virginia, was raised on the campus of St. Paul’s College, in Lawrenceville, VA. As the daughter of two educators, with one sister, Mrs. Shockley matured with a clear understanding of the value of an education, and a deep understanding and commitment to her faith. She earned degrees from Virginia State College (now University); and Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University) in Library Science, and later studied at Columbia University’s School of Library Science, (N.Y.). Her professional career in library science spanned over 30 years in public schools, colleges and universities, as well as seminaries, throughout America. Mrs. Shockley was married for forty-nine years to the late Dr. Grant S. Shockley, a United Methodist Church minister, professor and seminary and college president. The Shockley’s have one daughter. As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. since 1940, Mrs. Shockley was initiated in the Alpha Eta Chapter at Virginia State College. Always an active Delta, Mrs. Shockley is now a member of the Atlanta Alumnae Chapter. Upholding our legacy of service, she has volunteered with the American Cancer Society; American Heart Association; Epworth Towers (now Asbury Harris E.T.) and Hands on Atlanta as a reading tutor, as well as other community organizations. Mrs. Shockley is a life member of the N.A.A.C.P. and had served as a member of the Board of Trustees/Directors of several institutions and agencies. Doris T. Shockley is well traveled, both domestically and internationally. She enjoys the theater and the arts, reading, sports, and playing bridge. In 1971, Mrs. Shockley joined Ben Hill United Methodist Church. She has held numerous positions at Ben Hill, including President of the United Methodist Women; church school teacher; chairperson, Pastor Parish Relations Committee; Associate Lay Leader; and a member of the Administrative Board and Finance Committee. Presently, she is a member of the United Methodist Women and the Jewels and Partners Ministry.

Mrs. Annie K. Williams Scholarship Expand

This scholarship award was established in honor of Mrs. Annie K. Williams, an Atlanta native, graduate of Howard High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Morris Brown College; a Master of Education, Reading Specialist from Atlanta University and was accepted into the Doctoral Program at Georgia State University and worked extensively in the field of Education Leadership until her retirement in 1990. Mrs. Williams was a devoted wife and mother. She was also an entrepreneur, an avid bridge player, a world traveler, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and an active member of Holsey Temple CME Church. But most of all she was a phenomenal educator in the Atlanta Public School system. She served for many years as a representative to the National Education Association (NEA) and the Georgia Association of Educators (GAE). Mrs. Williams had an insatiable love for teaching and learning. In celebration of Mrs. Williams’ life, her family would like to bless a student who also has a vision of and passion for education.

Ms. Ashley LaVerne Tannehill Outstanding Service Scholarship Expand

This scholarship has been established in loving memory of Ms. Ashley LaVerne Tannehill, by her parents, LaVerne Tannehill Jenkins and the late Fernando Keith Tannehill.

Ashley was a native Atlantan. Where she was an active youth at Ben Hill UMC. She was the 2006 recipient of the BHUMC Leadership Scholarship for Community & School. A 2006 honor graduate of Grady High School where she was senior class president and “Ms. Grady”. Ashley went on to graduate Cum Laude from Howard University with a BA in Public Relations. She continued her education with a Master of Education from Liberty University, and an Education Specialist Degree in Administration from the University of NC, Greensboro. Ashley became an Instructional Facilitator with the Wake County Public Schools in Raleigh, NC where she was a devoted educator. Her international travels took her to Africa and many other exciting places. Ashley loved to write, was passionate about reading and loved her Alpha Kappa Alpha sisters.

In celebration of Ms. Tannehill’s life, her family would like to bless a female high school senior who has a passion for service to church, school or community with this scholarship.

The Leon Jamison Memorial Scholarship Fund Expand

This book award was established in memory of Mr. Leon Jamison by the Honorable Marvin Arrington to honor Mr. Jamison’s professional excellence and his civic and athletic accomplishments. Mr. Jamison was a native of Pheba Mississippi (Clay County) and a1953 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and a 1957 graduate of Tennessee State University. Mr. Jamison was a life-long educator and a dedicated family man. The book award fund will be maintained in an escrow account which will be overseen by the Ben Hill United Methodist Church Higher Education and Campus Ministry.

Dr. James E. Collins II Book Award Expand

Dr. James E. Collins II Book Award was established to aid a Ben Hill United Methodist Church (BHUMC) graduating high school senior with a $500.00 award, to assist with the cost of books. The award will be maintained in an account by BHUMC and administered through the Higher Education and Campus Ministry of Ben Hill United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Charlene Booker Collins Book Award Expand

Mrs. Charlene Booker Collins was the mother of Dr. James E. Collins II. Mrs. Collins was born in Houston, TX and was an outstanding mother, mentor and educator. She graduated from Texas Southern University in 1955 and received her Master’s Degree in Reading from the University of Houston in 1979. Mrs. Collins was an active member of Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, TX, where she served as Superintendent of the Sunday School for 10 years. Her life exemplified one of dedication and passion for students and educational achievement.

The Mrs. Charlene Booker Collins Book Award was established in her memory, by her son, Dr. James E. Collins II, to aid a Ben Hill United Methodist Church (BHUMC) graduating high school senior with a $500.00 Book Award, to assist with the cost of books. The award will be maintained in an account by BHUMC and administered through the Higher Education and Campus Ministry of Ben Hill United Methodist Church.

Mr. Ivan Walton Book Award Expand

This Book Award is established in honor of Mr. Ivan Tyrell Xavier Walton, an Atlanta native. He was a 2014 graduate of Riverwood International Charter High School. Ivan had a passion for education, especially History. He was known by those who knew him as “The Great Historian”. Mr. Walton’s passion led him to attend Georgia Military College in 2015. He received his Associate Degree of Science in 2017. His goal was to earn a Master's Degree in, History and become a Curator and educate others. In keeping with his dedication to education, with a Historical focus, one male or female will be the recipient of this heartfelt book award.

Higher Education and Campus Ministry Book Award Expand

Higher Education and Campus Ministry Book Award was established to aid a graduating high school senior or current college or technical school student with a $500.00 book award, to assist with the cost of pursuing higher education. The book award will be maintained in an account by BHUMC and administered through the Higher Education and Campus Ministry of Ben Hill United Methodist Church.

Ben Hill United Methodist Church Book Award Expand

Please note this is a one time award for members that have an active status at Ben Hill United Methodist Church. This book award is given after the first semester of your enrollment in college, immediately after graduation from high school.

The Ben Hill United Methodist Women Book Award Expand

United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. The purpose of this book award is to enable and encourage young ladies of Ben Hill United Methodist Church to pursue paths of education that will further their wholeness in and through God; as well as support their ongoing commitment to mission and service through ministries in the local or global communities.
